Some of you know that I'm a teacher and I come from the world of education.
This list is an educational tool to help you learn to research various
records that will lead you to your freguesia (village) and then how to
"read" those records.

When teaching my students, I've always said that ability to succeed was
only 50%. The other 50% is the negative self-talk or negative beliefs one
has about themselves in the subject. Same is true for "reading" the
records. Or learning to understand DNA.

This blurb came up in one of my education groups. A good chunk of it is
applicable to genealogy as well. They are calling it "fixed mindset" versus
"growth mindset." I guess that's better than me saying "Psyche yourself up
not psyche yourself out." Here goes:

Don't say: I'm not good at this.
Do say: What am I missing?

Don't say: I'm awesome at this.
Do say: I'm on the right track.

Don't say: I give up.
Do say: I'll use some of the strategies we've learned.

Don't say: This is too hard.
Do say: This may take some time and effort.

Don't say: I can't make this any better.
Do say: I can always improve so I'll keep trying.

Don't say: I just can't do ________.
Do say: I'm going to train my brain in _____.

Don't say: I made a mistake.
Do say: Mistakes help me to learn better.

Don't say: She's so smart. I'll never be that smart.
Do say: I'm going to figure out how she does it.

Don't say: It's good enough.
Do say: Is it really my best work?

Don't say: Plan A didn't work.
Do say: Good thing the alphabet has 25 more letters (in the English
language).
