I've noticed on records that the wife of a soldier was called Dona. However, I didn't observe what rank the soldier held, though. When my husband was commander of the 65th in Puerto Rico, they called me Dona Maria. Which made me feel old but I've since seen this practice in my research. (Whatever it's worth). So maybe (?) they still use it out of courtesy to the office?
