When we were in Sao Miguel a few years ago, we arranged for a taxi 
driver/day tour ahead of time.  When we started our tour from our hotel at 
8:00am, the driver had already made a reservation for us at Furnas, so the 
food was ready for us when we got there at lunch time.  He waited for us to 
have our meal and

 a little look around - along with all the other taxi drivers waiting in 
front of the restaurant.  Then we continued with our island tour.  I think 
you can do this with the link (shown somewhere in this thread) to Azores 
Tours and with the taxi driver that was recommended.  It was a fun 
experience, lots of food!!!
