Yes, they are the same but I would not use them interchangeably because the
two forms are being carried by families to date.  Some families use Alvares
in full form while others use Alves.  You should keep track to see where
yours will end up.

To get an understanding; this surname is qualified as Patronymic
originating from a first name Alvaro.

It began as Alvares (meaning the son of Alvaro) evolving to Alves current
day.

Short form you will see Alz.  Some priests wrote Alves others wrote Alvres
which is pointing to the original form of Alvares.
