The brother and sister inherited their DNA from the same parents but because of
the way DNA works they did not receive the same DNA from each parent. The
Brother may have received 55% from his father and 45% from his mother while his
sister may have received 45% from her father and 55% from her mother. They are
still brother and sister. Now they both take a Family Finder DNA test and the
both get a match with Mr. Y. The brother matches him with 257 cm and the sister
matches him with 117 cm. This is because the brother inherited more of the DNA
that matches Mr. Y and the sister less. This is because siblings do not receive
the same DNA and the same snips from their parents unless they are identical
twins.

Until you can identify a common ancestor you will not know whether Mr. Y
matches the father or the mother unless you have tested enough of the family to
have the Parental matching feature at FTDNA identify which parental line of the
brother and sister he is related to. Just because he matches the brother with
257 cm does not mean it is the fathers line he could have inherited that from
the mother.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Finder Matches Question

If a sister does a Family Finder DNA with her brother and they match as
siblings and on their matches they match another unknown male...the sister
match is 117 centimorgans and the brother's match is 257 centimorgans....any
relevant meaning of this....i.e. would this unknown male match the male line
more than the female line or................??
