Julio W, For the island of Sao Miguel, the only passaportes that are in existence begin in 1875. There are missing gaps in between. Everything that they have has been digitized and placed online at the CCA site. You can use Tombo.pt as a portal to access the CCA site, as navigation the site is much easier through Tombo.pt.
Angra and Horta have older Passaporte records. You could check on of the other ports to see if he left there. If he did not leave from Angra or Horta, then you are stuck. The records are missing and there is no way to know.
