Thinking more about this The use of DNA is becoming more wide spread and is approaching the use of finger prints for identity. When I joined the military in 1965 we were finger printed and that was kept on file as a positive way of identifying a person. Somewhere all the finger print cards for persons that served in the military going back prior to WW II are kept. Today when you join the military not only are your fingerprints recorded but you provide your DNA. Persons convicted of a crime now give their DNA. My sister told me that when she started school back in the early 60’s all the kids were finger printed. In most places new born babies are foot printed at the hospital. Is a day coming when we not only finger print but also DNA Test? Is the use of DNA for our good or detriment just as the finger print is used today? Just another thing to think about. They wanted their DNA to be used for genealogy and feel that the police use of a family database for criminal work feels invasive to them. Everyone is entitled to their own feelings, so some may stay and some may go. In my DNA lecture on third party tools, I've always explained that GedMatch lives out there on the Wild Wild West of the Internet and have a slide that shows a western scene with a couple of guys in front of a saloon, ready for a show down. You need to completely understand the Terms and Services of the third party sites when you upload. FTDNA has a warning screen on their end that states when you download your raw data and take it with you, you're on your own. Kinda like withdrawing money from a bank. Your money is safe when it's in a bank (and banks in America have a type of insurance to keep money safe), but if you take your money out of the bank and get robbed on the way home, the bank can't help you. There will be more coming up soon with Europe's General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR) on May 25th. FTDNA is complying and you will have even more security of your DNA. A couple of security things are already active on FTDNA. This is for any customer of FTDNA, anywhere in the world.
