Marsha S,

The analogy I am coming up with is your raw DNA data is like having money
in a bank. The "banks" in this scenario are FTDNA and MyHeritage. You can
take your money out of one bank and put it in another. You can take your
raw data from one company and put it in another. Your money is yours to do
with it as you wish. And your raw data is also yours to do with as you wish.

This initial post is about DNA testing companies (like banks). GEDMatch is
a 3rd party tool. I haven't yet come up with an analogy for it yet. Only
thing I can sort of come up with is banks (in America) are FDIC insured.
GedMatch isn't. Anyone can access it, even law enforcement. But that's a
different topic for a different email.

Hi Cheri,

I had thought there were privacy concerns re downloading raw data?

Are there pros/cons re uploading to My Heritage? What about GedMatch?

before December 1

(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and IslandRoutes lists)

For those who have DNA tested, you will want to download your raw data from
whichever company and transfer it over to My Heritage DNA before December
1st.

Each testing company has developed different tools and has different
population samples. Transferring to MyHeritage DNA is currently free. Use
of their tools will be grandfathered in. Beginning December 1st, you will
have to pay. No, I don't know the amount.

Here is what Dick Eastman says about the transfer: https://goo.gl/F5VScW

Here is Roberta Estes' step-by-step guide to downloading and transferring:

Roberta went to My Heritage's conference last week and spent a lot of time
at the DNA lectures. Roberta does have a scientific or technical
background, so she completely understands this stuff. She tries very hard
to break the science down for the us to understand in her blog,
DNA-Explained.com. She wrote a long, detailed article on how DNA matching
is done at My Heritage. All companies have their own similar processes. I
encourage everyone to read the article and try to follow along. You don't
need to understand the gory details. The only understanding is that there's
a lot of science and stuff behind the scenes going into these matches and
it's not a perfect science. There's no way to appreciate it until you read
(or attend) lectures like this. So read her latest blog with the
understanding that you are following along and will only digest small
portions of it: https://goo.gl/uAnanQ

And transfer over now, before American Thanksgiving and other things that
will come up and make you forget :)
