Just a small point regarding the naming of the Sandwich Islands. Capt James Cook discovered them in January 1778 and named them after the Earl of Sandwich. Captain Cook was British and explored the both Pacific & Atlantic making many maps of lands previously unknown at that time. Rosemary is right about the Azores being called the Western Islands, this persisted until the late 1800’s according to some official papers concerning my ancestor from the Azores! Tony

The Azores Islands were known as the 'Western Islands' in the USA for a long time. When I was first starting to do my research I thought it meant Hawaii, that's West of California, right?! Never assume, that should be everones motto.
