Yes Cheri, you are right. There were no English governors of Azores.

Jan,

Go back and reread the email. I did not give you the link to FamilySearch. I
gave you the link to Tombo.pt, which in turn, links you to the AZOREAN
GOVERNMENT web site. There is a difference between the two.

To my knowledge, the Azores never had governors. I don't think they'd let a
non-Portuguese have power. However, I am not well versed in Azorean history, so
those who are will chime in, I'm sure.

Happy hunting,

Hi Thanks for your reply, it was very helpful. I am familiar with the
Familysearch site. But knowing the steps to use in researching so thanks for
including them. I believe Jane Whittle was born in the Azores circa 1800. I
have also read that her guardian Henry Lloyd was the temporary governor of the
Azores he was born 1784 died 1844. I am trying to google the governors to see
if I can confirm. Warm Regards, Jan Visinko

Jan V,

Where was Jane Whittle born? You never state that.

The Azores is an autonomous region of Portugal. They consist of 9 islands, the
largest of which is Sao Miguel. San Miguel is one of the Channel Islands off
the coast of California. :)

Everything in the Azores is organized on the town level (village or freguesia).
They are mainly the Catholic records. Were your people Catholic? If so, start
going through all 70 or so churches on Sao Miguel island, looking for your
people. https://tombo.pt/i/sao-miguel

If they were not Catholic, they may have used the Civil Registry for that time
period. Some of those records exist. I don't believe they were digitized. You
will have to go to your local Family History Center (FHC) that is affiliated
with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (no, you don't need to be
Mormon to use their library). You will have to order the film for each village
that had Civil Registry records and look through them for your people.

Good luck,

Hi, I am from Australia. I am looking for the birth of my ggg grandmother Jane
Whittle born circa 1800. On Jane's marriage certificate she has guardians
called Henry and Mary Lloyd. Her husband James Christie worked for Lloyds
Shipping in Portugal (Aveiro and Figueira) 1818. I believe she could be the
daughter of Col. Samuel Whittle and his wife Catharine, and the sister of Mary
Lloyd, born in San Miguel 28.10.1789, full name Alicia Mary de Visme Whittle.
She married Henry Lloyd in UK 1811. I believe Jane and James met in Portugal,
went by ship to England to marry and returned to St. Miguel. There first born
Mary Jane was born in Portugal. Is there anyone who can help me with these
families? I would be most grateful, thanks Jan Visinko, Blue Mountains, NSW,
