Yes, it is possible to create a skeleton backups file that
would allow the old backups to be browsed and restored.
However, I haven't written a script to do this.

Check in the backups.old file.  It should be a previous version
that has some or all of the information you need.

Some of the stats information (eg: number of new or existing files,
total file sizes) would be harder, but not impossible, to recreate.

If you really need to access these old backups then I can cook
up a script that re-creates the backups file.
