You didn't mention the OS on the clients but since you were using
samba, I'll assume it is windows.  Cygwin rsync doesn't work
when started under sshd, with or without backuppc involved.
It will transfer a few files and stall.  I don't think anyone
has gotten this to work.  You can run rsync in daemon mode
and use ssh for port-forwarding to reach it.  Some specific
directions for this were posted to the list some time ago.
