compression for files is turned on by default. you only get files in your
uncompressed pool, if you explicitly turn off compression (either
system-wide, or per-host).

for instance, I put the following lines in my localhost.pl confile file:

# turning off compression on these files, so they can be recovered without
# backuppc.
# wouldn't make sense to need your backup server, 
# in order to recover your backup server, now would it?
$Conf{CompressLevel} = 0;
