That doesn't appear to be the problem in my case. I ran ping from the backup server to the machine being backed up during a backup of the same small set of files and saw no latency or packet loss:

--- lucca.usenix.org ping statistics ---
73 packets transmitted, 73 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.243/0.377/1.582/0.157 ms

and the backup did fail in the same way as previous attempts.
