Not much... I think that is about the password check.  Do you have
anything in /var/log/secure?

I'm sure that's one of those things that an experienced Linux user would have checked right away.  It seems at some point I had accidentally changed the ownership of the /root directory.  I set those back and all is well once more.  Thanks to all who offered help.
