I've found the problem I reported on a thread re this topic earlier today. It seems a bug was introduced into Samba which caused this problem if the Windoze client had a directory containing more than 36 files! The fix is to install the development version 3.0.20 of Samba. Version 3.0.13 is no good. 3.0.10 also seems to have the bug.
The race condition causes timeouts, too many smbtar errors, fills up memory etc. After installing 3.0.20, things are back the way they used to be with pre 3.0.10 versions of Samba. For some reason, the problem does not seem to happen if you are using a relatively slow server and fast client. If the client is slow, that makes it worse.
