That's what I do and it works fine (as long as you don't mind the speed
issues).

However, I think you need to make sure you don't have any firewalls
blocking your path.

Also, be careful with netbios lookups (nmblookup).  In this case, it's a
broadcast and shouldn't be routed.  Either use WINS or a static IP.

i have decided that maybe i should try smb instead of rsync when backing

up my server, as i am having some problems with rsync..

i just need to know if this setup will work..

i am putting the backuppc server offsite, across town..

if the server is across town, behind a router, and the server that we 
want to back up is in our building, behind a router.. can smb work 
across the routers? i have not thought about it fully, but i remember 
having some problems doing something similar to this back in the day..

any help is appreciated..
