You could have the clients periodically rsync the files to the server themselves, and then just have the server back up from localhost. It's a very inefficient approach, but it could work. You will need a lot of extra disk space on your backup server to do something like this, though, as you won't be taking advantage of BackupPC's pooling and compression, so you'll need exactly as much disk space as you're backing up, in addition to what you already needed for BackupPC and the rest of the system. But if you don't have too many hosts, or you have a whole heck of a lot of disk space, it may work to accomplish what you want.
