scp with normal 1.3 mb
scp with blowfish 1.8mb
ftp transfer 6.2mb.

you could always replace ssh in the backup commands with rsh, if you were
willing to install that on your client machines. that should accomplish
about what you want.
Or you could try using '-c blowfish' with ssh as an intermediate
approach. It will cut overhead without needing other changes.
