OpenVPN is a good solution, I am using it for the sole purpose of
rsyncd backups between the US and Australia. Turning on compression
(comp-lzo option) has also reduced backup times and bandwidth
requirements by about 50% since the rsyncd client in BackupPC doesn't
support rsync compression.
