signal=ALRM can mean a number of things:

1. The backup is taking too long. (Try to increase the timeout value
in your config.pl.)

2. You recently upgraded rsync. (Try to replace all occurrences of
"--devices" in your config.pl with "-D".)

3. Some other obscure reasons.

Perhaps you can whether #1 and #2 applies in your case. But if
"nothing is happening on the server" it's likely that #1 is not the
reason, so I guess you can try #2.
