Excellent. I was successful with the su -s technique (thanks, Mr. Barratt), and
then edited /etc/passwd (thanks, Mr. Real).

Now, the backuppc entry is:

backuppc:x:101:407:added by portage for backuppc: \
/var/lib/backuppc:/bin/bash

...which allows standard logins with a simple "su backuppc" command, albeit
without a password.

Should I give backuppc a passwd or will that break something
else? Should I even care about unrestricted access to the backuppc user?
