If you haven't installed Compress::Zlib then compression won't happen. Unlike 2.x, in 3.0.0 it is a fatal error to specify compression without Compress::Zlib being available. Look at the bottom of the host summary to see whether the files were compressed. Note that when you browse a backup with the CGI interface the files appear uncompressed whether or not they are really compressed.
