If you already have some backups with tar, there should be no problem just switching to rsync and letting it continue making more backups. There is one subtle issue with restoring hardlinks using rsync when the original backup was taken with tar. If that becomes an issue for you (unlikely after you have some rsync backups) then you can just switch the XferMethod temporarily back to tar if you need to restore an old backup and the hardlink issue is a concern.
