You can treat the VMs just like you would regular physical hosts, if
you'd like to keep things simple.

Not sure what that means, but it doesn't sound like a problem

That depends on where you are using LVM-- if you are using lvm /within/
your VMs, you can run a pre-dump script to execute lvcreate -s to
create and mount a snapshot, and a postdumpt scrip to remove them.
However, if your VM's are running on top of lvm on the /host/ OS that
wouldn't work. Your VM server may have tools for snapshotting entire
machines. VMware has vmsnap.pl script for doing this-- but it's meant
to scp the entire machine to another location rather than mounting it
and running tar, etc.

I have restored machines with a knoppix disk, partition the drive,
netcat |tar xf, reinstall grub and you're good to go. I don't think
this needs to be very automatic unless you really have flaky hardware ;-)

Not sure what you mean but you should be able to clone VMs with whatever
virtual software you are using. If nothing else you can boot a fresh VM
to knoppix and restore a backup to it to achieve a similar effect?

*shrug*
good luck ;-)
