Hi all,
I have been using BackupPC on an Ubuntu machine for many months without
too many issues. I decided to upgrade to version 3 two weeks ago.
After running the configuration script, the new installation did not
recognize the older backup sets. I never got around to being able to
fix this. A few hours after doing the upgrade while I was trying to fix
the problem, I the backup server and noticed the screen was frozen.
After rebooting the server it got to the sign in screen for Ubuntu, but
it froze up before I could do anything. Sometimes the server would even
restart itself right after booting up. I was able to start the box
under "safe mode", but that meant that none of the services would start
up. I basically spent a week trying to fix my box, assuming there was
something wrong with Ubuntu.
I finally decided to try starting BackupPC from the command line in safe
mode. The server immediately rebooted itself! I removed the backuppc
script from /etc/init.d/ and the server now starts up with no problem...
I am planning on making a copy of a few local settings and documents,
and wiping the system and starting from scratch. Does anyone have any
idea what might have caused this sort of behavior? Unless someone has
some insight, it seems as though a fresh install is the only way to go.
I would just rather not loose my archived backup sets.
Any advice?
Thanks.
-Matt Kelly.
