If your work is committed (which is kind of the point of using svn...) 
you should be able to reproduce any working copy by checking it out of 
the repository again.  And no new work should be under the .svn 
directories - they are used to maintain state matching the repository at 
the last update/commit.  To recover without them you'd have to check out 
a new copy, then move the modified-but-not-committed files from your 
restored backup into the right places - a bit of work but you wouldn't 
have to lose anything.
