Don't forget the fundamental difference between rsync and samba. rsync transfers only the difference, samba transfers all data, every backup! My rsync transfers speeds may not be very high (< 1 MB/s), but that's because rsync is not continually transferring data (it's also figuring out *what* to transfer exactly). It would take a lot longer to backup my servers if all data had to be transfered every time.
