I am backing up ~1.6TB of data on various hosts, BackupPC takes a very very
long time unfortunately as compared to my previous backup system Veritas
BackupExec. In spite of this I have still chosen to use BackupPC for the
following reasons:
* Even though we paid for BackupExec and it is much faster, I was
running into a wall with backup disk space as our data useage grows
* BackupPC after smart linking took down disk consumption from ~2TB to
less than 900GB (!!)
* BackupPC enables me to empower users to restore their own files
* BackupPC enables me to now get 28 days of incrementals, where I could
only get one full and about 3 incrementals with BackupExec in the same
available disk space
Although 90% of the backup is linux filesystems, the only thing I have yet to
figure out is to backup our Exchange server. Right now what I am doing is
running BackupExec in a VMware virtual machine to backup the Exchange server
and then I am backing up the VM with BackupPC. It works for now.
On a separate note for all you BackupPC guru’s out there, I have two volumes on
servers that are each around 600-700GB, I have noticed that these take an
extremely long time to back up and the chance of the backup failing is much
higher than our other smaller backup sources. Is there any optimization
strategies I can employ to get these backed up faster and more reliably? One
is our home directory server, which is around 600GB. I have thought about
defining multiple hosts but I cannot think of an easy way to separate out a
block of homedirs for each host, since all of them reside in /export/home/*.
Any ideas?
/Christian
