Sending the files or directories individually would be a great feature in itself. I have had so many problems with rsync and tar running out of resources because of the cumulative share size being too large. Sending the sub-directories individually would solve that headache ... + having the option to exclude with the .donobackup would be just that much better.
I was looking at a way to patch backuppc to do something like this, I think I'll have another look - although I still don't fully understand the whole process.
