Thanks for the advice and sorry for the messed up subject line. (fixed above) As for using ddrescue over the network can that just be tunneled like dd? I will be adding more physical space to the machine in a few days, but I'd like to get working sooner because my backup system is down in the meantime. Of course that might not be an option since the filesystem will take a while to copy and fsck anyway. I'd rather reuse the old space and keep the history continuous if at all possible. Thanks again.
