having successfully installed Backuppc and backing up some of our

backed up using localhost.pl (system is Debian Etch 4.0).

1st) restore to local machine failed, since the "ssh to localhost" did give an key error: later, after some research I found out that there has
to be a directory /var/lib/backuppc/.ssh with owner backuppc and a
"known_hosts" file from /root/.ssh.

Is there anything about that in any documentation/FAQ?

Yes. Step 5 of the installation process
(<http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/faq/ BackupPC.html#step_5__client_setup>) points you to <http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/faq/ssh.html> for SSH setup.
Sure. But I didn't get that I had to ssh to _localhost_, too ...

You don't *have* too, but your config is probably set up to do so. It does help to keep your config uniform. If you're not using ssh to an admin account on localhost you will probably have to change your config to use sudo. I think there are some posts on that in the list archives, but I never bothered and just use ssh for localhost and all my other hosts.
