manage about 11-12. 

I run 4 backups at a time on that machine.  Dual Opteron 265, 14 drive 
raid10, 3ware raid controller.  It IS possible to get some nice speed 
out of backuppc, it just takes a fair amount of raw horsepower.

Our more sane servers run about 2-3 m/s like yours.
