Backuppc (3.0.0) has been running smoothly for me for a week or so
(backuping up 2 linux boxes and 2 windows boxes).

But just yesterday, my log was filled with errors of BackupPC_link
(usually -3 or -4).

I searched the mailing list archives and often this has to do with
changed TopDir. I have in fact changed the TopDir, but I am very sure I
did everything right as the program has been working well.

I noticed this one post from last year:

This might mean you are out of hardlinks (use df -i to check)
or that /var/lib/backuppc/pc/clientname is on a different
filesystem than /var/lib/backuppc/cpool (use:

    df /var/lib/backuppc/pc/clientname
    df /var/lib/backuppc/cpool

to check).

... which suggests that perhaps I am out of hard links.

I ran df -i and got this output:

backuppc:/mnt/bu1/backuppc# df -i
Filesystem Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/backuppc-root   2317440  107011 2210429    5% /
tmpfs                         31938       3   31935    1% /lib/init/rw
udev                          31938     820   31118    3% /dev
tmpfs                         31938       1   31937    1% /dev/shm
/dev/hda1                     62248      34   62214    1% /boot
/dev/mapper/back--vol-bu1 39075840 1466752 37609088    4% /mnt/bu1

But I am not sure how this summary of inode usage tells me about hard
link usage.

BTW, my TopDir is /mnt/bu1/backuppc (the /dev/mapper/back--vol-bu1
logical volume comprising a RAID 1 array)

I grepped though config.pl and found no references to /var/lib anywhere.

As an aside, however, here's a curiosity:

My log files are still going to to /var/lib/backuppc/log (yes, these
directories still exist from when I first installed the program, which
is a new Debian lenny box BTW).

The docs say that the config for the log file is in /BackupPC, but of
course, that directory does not exist on my stock lenny install. It's
not a problem as I have plenty of room on /var but still it seems
strange that this does not get "fixed" by setting TopDir correctly. But
that is a secondary issue.

Thanks for any help.

P.S. As to your other suggestion from a year ago:

backuppc:/mnt/bu1/backuppc# df -h /mnt/bu1/backuppc/pc/map
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/back--vol-bu1
                      294G   99G  180G  36% /mnt/bu1
backuppc:/mnt/bu1/backuppc# df -h /mnt/bu1/backuppc/cpool
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/back--vol-bu1
                      294G   99G  180G  36% /mnt/bu1
backuppc:/mnt/bu1/backuppc#

Also:

backuppc:/etc/backuppc# less config.pl | grep TopDir
# TopDir - where all the backup data is stored
$Conf{TopDir} = '/mnt/bu1/backuppc';
# Maximum number of hardlinks supported by the $TopDir file system
backuppc:/etc/backuppc# less config.pl | grep var/
#    $Conf{CgiUserHomePageCheck} = '/var/www/html/users/%s.html';
# --> if /var/www/html/users/craig.html exists, then 'craig' will
backuppc:/etc/backuppc# less config.pl | grep /var
#     $Conf{TarShareName} = ['/', '/var', '/data', '/boot'];
#     $Conf{RsyncShareName} = ['/', '/var', '/data', '/boot'];
#     $Conf{BackupPCdShareName} = ['/', '/var', '/data', '/boot'];
#    $Conf{CgiUserHomePageCheck} = '/var/www/html/users/%s.html';
# --> if /var/www/html/users/craig.html exists, then 'craig' will
backuppc:/etc/backuppc#
