I think that means your ClientTimeout has expired.  Try raising it to 
something much longer.

If you have a lot of disk space you can let backuppc split to files in a 
directory as you would for CD/DVD writing, then write them to tape with 
dd or some program that knows how to keep a tape drive streaming.
