I killed the backuppc daemon all together then started  
backuppc_trashclean manually. The output reads:

> processState idle
> processState running
> processState idle
> processState running
> processState idle
> processState running
> processState idle

At regular intervals which seem to coincide with the trashclean delay  
set in the admin pane. This would appear to be expected behavior.
