You don't say what Linux (or other) distribution you are using; but
it should be possible to set the default mail transport agent at the
OS level.
in RedHat and Fedora you can use either
system-switch-mail
or
alternatives --config mta
to set your mail system to postfix
Once you do that, then Postfix provides a program called sendmail, so
you do not have to change any setting in the BackupPC config
