hi Paul,

I agree with you, but I think this is not prudent to have the passwords to
clear stored in a file.
But if we are ever attacked from the outside?
I think the passwords in / etc / shadow / are not clear even to root?
we trust our users, the administrator, so everything must be allowed to
clear? NO.
So, i dont have probleme with my Backuppc, because it installed in the private
lan isolated, but, the hacker are very clever...

Regards
Nadia

Hello Nadia,

A cursory glance of the /etc/BackupPC/pc directory reveals that the permissions
for per-server config files are 640.  this means that only processes running
under the backuppc umbrella of users can access those passwords.

In essence, if you trust the BackupPC web frontend, and if you trust UNIX
permissions, then the only people who can access the passwords stored in the
per-pc .pl files are the users who own the computers, and the root user on the
server hosting BackupPC (and if you don't trust your sysadmin, you have other
problems).

Adios,

Hi Dan,

for security, how to encrypt the backup on the server, i use the rsyncd to
backup, because its verry simple to install, and it used only in the network,
but i found the rsyncdsharpasswd in the config fil,

Rsyncd cant encrypt the data, but only authentification with MD4 128 bit (only
chanlenge-response).

Now im installing Nagios for monitoring backuppc, i havve find the plugin for
backuppc.

Thank you

Nadia

I completely understand that you will have to answer many questions for
non-technical management.  Quotas are rarely used in any kind of backup program
and backuppc is no exception.

What security questions do you anticipate?  You can encrypt the disk that
backuppc uses if you like but that would hurt your performance quite a bit.
The standard web interface is simple enough that it does not leave a lot of
room for unathorized access.  The only real threat is having an 'admin' level
user's password given out OR physical access to the system.

ok dan, thank you for your reply.
I asked this question, because I just finished my stage on installing
backuppc, and I am preparing to questions of jury, like quotas, security,..

??why would you do that??  you will certainly have many failed backups if you
do this.  Also, the quota would have no useful function except to break backups.

You might be ok if you just
setup SOFT quotas and put the hard limits extremely high.  Then the backuppc
server would send an email each time someone backed up data over their quota
but once they hit that point they would get a notification every single time
until an old full backup expired that had some large files that have been
deleted.

You would be much better off putting a quota on the remote computer for the
user in question.  You can do this in windowsXP+ easily.

managing quotas in linux is well beyond the scope of this mailing list and
google can help you out but I think that this is not a functional solution on
backuppc.  backuppc should just do backups, not tell people how much they can
backup.
