I think that option is reasonable. It does rely on some scripting but
should work well.
I would like to mention that running rsync as a service will use negligible
resources.
using vshadow in some way is likely the only way to reliably backuppc a
windows machine running a variety of programs from outlook to mssql server
that lock files from reading.
As far as backing up over the internet, here are a few options
get a dynamic dns service with a desktop client to update the dns. by doing
this you can specify a client alias of the dynamic dns name of the client.
this will work except where firewalls specifically block rsync ports.
another option is something like hamachi. it creates virtual private
networks with private static IP addresses. there is a free service with a
limited number of clients and pay services for more clients.
also, a VPN solution. openvpn isnt too difficult to setup. you could even
do an SSL vpn which forwards to backuppc upon successfull login allowing
manual backups. I run backups over cisco vpn tunnels quite successfully.
