Did you ever get this resolved? Im having the same problem, now all of my backups are failing with the same errors you are getting. Im using 2.6.9 protocol version 29. Ubuntu doesnt seem to have a newer version available yet. They are all on fiber or fast cable internet that is reliable. Different firewalls at each location. I could never find any info if pfsense or m0n0wall close inactive connections.
