As a Mac user there is no PCMCIA. The choice is FW400/800, USB2 or a NAS drive. Ethernet would be easiest, but does not work well with Apple's otherwise brilliant 'rewindable' TimeMachine software and as I said Apple seem to be loosing interest in FW, so it rather leave USB ...
