Hi Jeremy, I wouldn't connect my BackupPC-Server to the internet without adding another Layer of security, by putting in a firewall between it. I'm running two BackupPC-Servers at our offices and they are both protected by a firewall (IPCop).
You can use older hardware (I'm using two FSC Scovery xS ThinClients bought from ebay (Pentium III, 900MHz, 512 MB RAM, 2GB CompactFlash-Card) with two additional network cards) for the firewall. Since IPCop is OpenSource you don't need to spent additional money. OpenVPN is really easy to setup on IPCop with a plugin called Zerina. Since you've Windows Client you can use OpenVPN GUI to connect from the l...@hillsboro to the IPCop in LA. With two additional scripts (launched by OpenVPN GUI after VPN-Login) you can automatically tell BackupPC to back up your clients. IPCop: http://www.ipcop.org/ Zerina: http://www.zerina.de/zerina/ OpenVPN GUI: http://openvpn.se/ If you need any further help, do not hesitate to contact me.
