I back up machines on other subnets all the time, and don't worry about the fact that they're on different networks. Have you looked at the logs on the target machine to see why your ssh+rsync connection was failing? Does it work when you try running rsync over ssh without backuppc? (rsync -e ssh -avz <target> <destination>).
