Hello, sorry for the lack of information. Effectively, all I see in the logs is nothing. The computer seems like hanging without any information logged, and if I'm lucky enough to be using htop by ssh while it performs a backup, it hangs as I can see the cpu was last at 100% usage and eventually my ssh session timeouts.
The OS is Ubuntu 8.10 LTS on a P3-1000, using the version of Backuppc that came in apt-get (3.0.0) and rsync is v. 3.0.0 too. Also, it does the same when backing up a Windows computer via smb Here's an example of messages.log: Jun 20 11:15:24 galactica -- MARK -- Jun 20 11:22:44 galactica syslogd 1.5.0#1ubuntu1: restart. (yes, I'm a Battlestar Galactica fan, a usb hard drive is identified "viper" and the next one will be "raptor") and in backuppc's logs: 2009-06-20 10:16:44 User backuppc requested backup of 192.168.2.91 (192.168.2.91) 2009-06-20 10:16:45 Started incr backup on 192.168.2.91 (pid=6457, share=salon) 2009-06-20 10:55:29 Reading hosts file 2009-06-20 10:55:29 BackupPC started, pid 5479 2009-06-20 10:55:30 Running BackupPC_trashClean (pid=5481) 2009-06-20 10:55:30 Next wakeup is 2009-06-20 11:00:00 2009-06-20 10:56:30 User backuppc requested backup of 192.168.2.91 (192.168.2.91) 2009-06-20 10:56:32 Started incr backup on 192.168.2.91 (pid=5850, share=salon) 2009-06-20 11:00:00 Next wakeup is 2009-06-20 12:00:00 2009-06-20 11:22:49 Reading hosts file 2009-06-20 11:22:49 BackupPC started, pid 5475 2009-06-20 11:22:49 Running BackupPC_trashClean (pid=5477) 2009-06-20 11:22:49 Next wakeup is 2009-06-20 12:00:00 2009-06-20 11:23:18 User backuppc requested backup of 192.168.2.91 (192.168.2.91) 2009-06-20 11:23:19 Started incr backup on 192.168.2.91 (pid=5845, share=salon) 2009-06-20 11:44:24 Reading hosts file I tried using burnbx to see if I could reproduce the problem by making the computer 100% busy for a while, but after 90 minutes I concluded that it was long enough since backuppc_dump crashes after 15 minutes. Also, I make some other cpu intensive tasks with this machine, like dvd (re)compiling, or rtorrent hashing when it completes a hefty torrent file. Is it possible that my computer is not good enough? If that's the case, I'm stuck to buy a new computer because this one uses a i815e chipset that limits it to 512 MB of ram. I'm starting to despair here because backuppc seems very promising and reliable for my needs.
