You gave me the needed lead but it was a combination of many small things. Creating the backuppc user on the two client systems apparently created a password that I had to delete, while on localhost I totally changed the TarClientCmd as shown in the FAQ at sourceforge... It appears to be working now, so I can proceed with expanding the amount of data to back up so that it includes my Email messages and work logs.
