Indeed. Backporting newer Debian packages to older releases is actually quite easy. See pbuilder: http://www.tolaris.com/2009/03/31/backporting-debian-packages-with-pbuilder/ I backported BackupPC from Ubuntu lucid to hardy the same way. The only real work in backporting comes when there is a new source release that hasn't been packaged at all yet.
