Indeed. Backporting newer Debian packages to older releases is actually quite 
easy. See pbuilder:

I backported BackupPC from Ubuntu lucid to hardy the same way. The only real 
work in backporting comes when there is a new source release that hasn't been 
packaged at all yet.
