You may want to a) look for bad capacitors on the board (similar to 
what's show at http://badcaps.net b) run a good memtest on that 
(www.memtest.org)

It was pretty common for the 2400's to die of bad caps.  It's possible 
your "spare machine" is actually a "dead machine we didn't throw out yet"
