I've seen the IBM RAID cards break (yes, 8k's I think...)- but it is
rare and we always have a spare chassis or two sitting around. For a
one-off box I'd use software, though.   I generally like the ability
to recover data from any single disk on any compatible controller like
you can with software RAID1.
