Debian Wheezy system.
Since the last missive I reformatted the bad system and installed a
minimal system. I then very carefully set up rsyncd on the system to be
backed up. I checked out the rsync connection with:
telnet <target system> 873
I then restored one file to the backup computer. Once this worked I
started backing up one directory at a time using the GUI and the direct
backup method. The directories involved are /etc /home, /root and /var.
I started with the smallest first and worked up to the largest.
Everything worked fine for /etc. /root and /var. When I tried to backup
/ home the system chugged along for a long time and then went to sleep.
I was monitoring the CPU, memory and network usage throughout all of
these processes. I had to manually stop the process by killing the PID.
The restore log had the following entries:

2012-11-30 10:59:23 Restore failed on TargetComputer (aborted by
signal=TERM)

I did a lot of searching of the internet and while I found references
to the problem, I didn't fine a clear solution. I did find reference to
the -D switch for rsync as being related but nothing substantive. I use
inetd.conf to start the rsync daemon with an entry of :
rsync stream tcp nowait root /usr/bin/rsync rsyncd --daemon
If the -D switch must be included, should it be something like rsyncd -D
daemon.
