This problem has nothing to do with BackupPC. It's the Debian package. That said, purging a Debian package does not and should not delete user data. Purging deletes configuration files - such as /etc/backuppc. In fact, the output of that apt-get command probably printed something like: dpkg: warning: while removing backuppc, directory '/var/lib/backuppc' not empty so not removed Which is the correct behaviour according to the Debian packaging guidelines.
